Motorpoint’s Malcolm Elliott showed Durham last night he has no intention of slowing down – even at the age of 48 – by taking his first win in the Halfords Tour Series 2010.
Spurned on by narrowly missing a win at Canary Wharf on Tuesday night, Elliott dominated the race from the word go.
The Durham course was brutal with riders climbing every three minutes, including a 1 in 10 descent on cobbles. Elliott described the course afterwards as the “longest hour of his life.”
The fight for the front began early with Elliott heading upfront. Quickly the field split and the peloton disintegrated. The course rapidly took its toll with stragglers being lapped, forcing riders to listen to the shouts of their managers from the sideline to clarify their position.
Despite being caught in a crash on lap three, Andy Tennant was straight back into the race and overall the team finished first on the night.
Speaking afterwards Andy said: “out of the two races so far, if you were going to predict which ones we’d do well in, then it would have been Canary Wharf, so to come here on probably the toughest crit ever the team did an excellent job.”
Of his win, Elliott added: “what drove me more than anything was fear out there, fear of being swamped and put at the back that kept me at the front.”
The win now leaves Motorpoint second overall heading to Portsmouth for Round three today.
